I’m much later publishing this newsletter than I normally am. For those who have been waiting with bated breath for the past few hours, wondering if everything is okay…I’m sorry. Yes, everything is fine. But life was much more busy this week than normal.
So, here I am…hanging my head in delinquent shame.
For those who didn’t notice a bit, enjoy the late-day treat. And to both groups, as always, a heartfelt thanks for taking the time to engage with my content.
What I’m writing…
AI can generate layouts, write copy, even simulate user flows in seconds. It’s efficient, fast, and kind of amazing. The kicker? Most of design isn’t about production. It’s about fit. It’s about the messy, shifting, deeply human context we work within every day. Generative AI can mimic process—but it can’t sense the problem.
This article explores what machines still can’t do, and why context keeps human designers at the heart of good design work.
What I’m thinking about…
There’s no substitute for time served in design. Every project adds to a growing backlog of solution experience. A mental library of patterns, pitfalls, and strategies that shape sharper instincts and better judgment. With each challenge faced and problem solved, designers don’t just become faster, they become more precise, more thoughtful, more efficient. Tools and trends may evolve, but true expertise is built through exposure, reflection, and repetition over time. I makes me think how time served relates to breadth of experiences. Or, how time served relates to perceived speed of work. Lots to ponder on this one.

HBR's 10 Must Reads on Managing Risk
By Harvard Business Review
I’ve only just started reading this one, but so far I’m digging it. Especially the chapter (article) by George S. Day called “Is it Real? Can we win? Is it Worth Doing? Managing Risk and Reward in an Innovation Portfolio”. Ok wow, it’s a long title, but it’s a blunt, yet practical take on the dangers of risk avoiding in business strategy in our modern era.
What I’m enjoying…
I just picked up a scooter in disguise. A Honda Navi. It’s an itty-bitty little “motorcycle” that’s fun to put around my little town on. I’m just getting acquainted with it, but so far, I’m having a blast on it (when it’s warm enough). I’m looking forward to the pending warmer weather so I can get out and build some time learning how to ride safely.
