Multi-Product Design Systems: A Pattern Language Approach
Coherence across products and markets without forceful uniformity
Most design systems become straitjackets when stretched across multiple products. Teams waste months building “universal” components that serve no one particularly well, forcing compromise instead of creating consistency. But what if there’s a better way? What if we could learn from how great cities work, where buildings look different but follow patterns that make the whole system thrive? This article explores Christopher Alexander’s revolutionary pattern language approach and how it can transform your multi-product design system from a rigid enforcer into supportive infrastructure that actually enables great experiences.
🧐 Something I’m thinking about…
Things I thought I’d never say as a designer. Years ago, I used to think my leaders “just didn’t get it”. They would bust out business terminology that seemed out of touch and…well…offensive. Who cares about ROI when you’re helping users? Profit isn’t the most important, impact on people is…and if you have a positive impact you’ll make money, right? I realize we can’t do everything, but clearly THIS idea is the most important in the stack of priorities. And on…and on…my judgement went. But now, here I am…a Senior Manager and suddenly this part of my daily conversation. I never imagined I would be able to rationalize using these words, let alone use them passionately to help end-users.
📚 Something I’m reading (well…listening to)…
Brand Yourself For Success
With Octavia Goredema
This read (well, listen) has been a good reminder that it takes intentionality to create an impression that lasts. Being yourself will naturally start making an authentic impression. That’s a good start, but you should also consider how to cultivate your personal brand. There are things you can do to reinforce it or undermine it. I’m not a person who likes to be in the spotlight, so I don’t like to make a big deal about my accomplishments. But if you are looking for that next promotion or that next role, it’s good practice to curate your accomplishments that highlight your standout skills. Then, you can be ready to share them when it’s time. This would be a good, short listen for anyone who wants to work on taking their next step in their career.
🤩 Something I’m enjoying…
Freedom in our nation, thanks to many people who’ve served in the military. This weekend in the USA, we celebrate Independence Day. I’m so thankful for the generations of people who have served in our many different branches of the military that have preserved our national freedom we have today. Over the years, countless people have given up their lives to provide the lives we have today. If you have served in the military, thank you for your service.
